Marcus Brandon, Candidate for N.C. House District 60 congratulated the Board of Directors of the new International Civil Rights Museum for its opening and called for a new era of civil rights leadership which emphasizes strong civic representation, quality education, and social justice for underprivileged communities.

At the unveiling of the International Civil Rights Museum on February 1, Marcus Brandon, Candidate for NC House District 60 showed his appreciation for the previous generations’ vision while  asserting that it was time for a new style of civic engagement.  “We thank our leaders for the work they have done to bring history to our doorstep.   It is time though, that we take the torch that is being passed to us and truly address the issues that continue to plague our community like the lack of quality education and gaping disparities of economic access for underprivileged families.   My campaign is about going into the community and really addressing those issues.   In that way, I intend to continue the work of the civil rights movement.

Noting his respect for the civil rights movement, Marcus Brandon pointed to his uncle, Lewis Brandon, who was the main organizer of the Greensboro sit-ins at Woolworths in the 1960’s and has become a venerated icon of both the civil rights movement and the Greensboro community.  “It is because of leaders like my uncle, Lewis Brandon, that I am even here today continuing the fight.

Marcus’ opponent in his primary election to N.C. House District 60, Earl Jones, currently sits on the Board of Directors for the museum.   Recognizing his opponent’s leadership in the construction of the museum, Marcus Brandon stated “I am very proud of the work that Earl Jones contributed in creating this beacon for our community, and I hope that he is able to turn his commitment to the museum into a full time endeavor after the May 4th election.”
